Citizenship FAQ
Frequently asked questions and answers for public reference.
I have fulfilled all application requirements, but why was my application unsuccessful and can I submit an appeal?
The Government is not yet satisfied to consider your application. The decision of the Honourable Minister is final. If you are interested in becoming a Malaysian citizen, you may submit a new application.
How can I expedite my citizenship application?
When the application was submitted, the applicant was informed that the citizenship status application would be processed and the decision would be notified to the applicant in writing.
However, the applicant may submit a letter stating the reasons for expediting the application process. Consideration and decision are subject to the Government of Malaysia.
My child was born abroad and is already one year old. Can I register my child’s birth for Malaysian citizenship?
You may submit an application for extension of overseas birth registration to the Honourable Minister through Headquarters by completing the same form and providing reasons for the late registration.
The application may be made at any Malaysian Representative Office abroad, or at the nearest NRD office if you have returned to Malaysia.
My child was born in Singapore and I am a Malaysian citizen.
For births in Singapore, registration with the Representative Office in Singapore is not required.
If your child intends to reside in Malaysia in the future, it is sufficient to apply for confirmation of citizenship status with the NRD through the Representative Office in Singapore and then apply for status certification with the Immigration Department.
My citizenship has been revoked or I have renounced Malaysian citizenship.
You are advised to visit an NRD office for an eligibility check and bring all relevant documents.
I gave birth to a child abroad and am married to a foreign national.
You may apply for citizenship for the child under the provisions of Article 15(2) of the Federal Constitution.
The application may be submitted at any National Registration Department Headquarters nearest to your place of residence.
