Registration of a Civil Marriage Outside Malaysia on or After 1 March 1982

Malaysian citizens who have registered their marriages according to the laws of a foreign country are required to re-register their marriages according to Act 164.

MyKad (original and copy)

Valid passport with information on arrival date in Malaysia and Abroad (original and copy)

Marriage certificate (original and copy)

Birth certificate for non-Malaysian citizens (original and copy)

One (1) passport-sized photograph with blue or white background for each applicants

If applicable:

Verification of entry and exit records from the Malaysian Immigration Department

Divorce certificate (original and copy)

Death certificate (original and copy)

Name verification letter (original and copy)

Religious verification letter for applicants with Muslim characteristics (original)

Marriage Certificate from Philippines/ India/ Indonesia /Cambodia/ Laos/ Nigeria/ Thailand/ Sri Lanka/ Vietnam/ Myanmar

Marriage certificates from the specified countries must be authenticated at the Embassy of the country in Malaysia.

The confirmation of the national embassy office then needs to be reconfirmed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) at Wisma Putra in Putrajaya/ Kuching/ Kota Kinabalu.

All certificates and supporting documents that are not in Malay or English must be translated.

If the translation is prepared abroad, it must be authenticated by the relevant authority:

The Embassy of the relevant country in Malaysia, or a Malaysian Representative Office in the relevant country.

Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA)

Documents translated in Malaysia by a certified translator are exempt from the authentication requirements stated above

Re-registration of foreign marriages is mandatory for all marriages involving Malaysian citizens.

Couples can attend the NRD or Malaysian Representative Office abroad within six (6) months from the date of marriage abroad to make this application

Penalty payment for applications that exceed 6 months from the date of marriage registration abroad:

RM100.00 for the first year.

RM50.00 for each subsequent year or part thereof

Only complete applications will be accepted and processed.

The applicant must submit any supporting documents requested by the NRD officer, if required
